½x² + 10x - 8

½(x² + 5x - 4) ------------------------------- factoring out ½

½(x² + 5x + 6.25 - 4 - 6.25) ------------------------------------ adding then subtracting 6.25 = (4/2)²

½((x + 2.5)² - 10.25)
