We want all terms with the exponent y on one side of equation. Divide both sides of the equation by 6y.
24y / 6y = 16
According to rules of exponents, when we divide a number raise to some value by another number raise to that same value, we can divide the two numbers and raise it to that value.
(24 / 6)y = 16
4y = 16
If we square the number 4, we get 16. Therefore,
y = 2
