Why do companies use AI recruiters instead of gathering the same info with e.g. a web page

Since AI recruiters are ultimately capturing verbal answers in spoken form, I'm wondering why companies are preferring to have a candidate essentially talk to a robot, rather than populate a form over the internet with the same kind of verbal answers.

It seems like it would be just as easy to have an AI operate on the answers after they're submitted through a web site. Furthermore, when I'm contacted by a robot voice about something as non-routine as hiring for a position, personally I tend to consider it much less seriously than being directed to a web link to answer questions.

Basically, while I understand the value of AI for data analysis etc., I'm not understanding the value of the synthetic voice, personality, etc.
