Improving your ASVAB score, especially in the Math and Word Knowledge sections, requires a targeted study plan and consistent practice. Here are some strategies I work through with my students for both sections:
1. Math Knowledge
- Review Basic Math Concepts: Focus on topics like arithmetic, algebra, geometry, and basic statistics. Ensure you understand concepts like fractions, percentages, ratios, and solving for variables.
- Practice Problem-Solving: Work through practice problems to apply the concepts. Using ASVAB study guides or online resources can be very helpful here.
- Memorize Key Formulas: Create flashcards or a formula sheet with essential math formulas that frequently appear on the test.
- Work on Speed and Accuracy: Time yourself on practice tests to get faster. Also, practice mental math to save time during the test.
2. Word Knowledge
- Expand Your Vocabulary: Use flashcards or apps like Quizlet to build vocabulary. Focus on common ASVAB words and review prefixes, suffixes, and roots to understand unfamiliar words.
- Practice Context Clues: Learn to derive meanings from context. Many test questions provide clues in the surrounding text that can help you figure out the word's meaning.
- Read Regularly: Reading articles, books, or even vocabulary-rich websites helps expose you to new words. Highlight words you don’t know, look them up, and add them to your study list.
- Use Practice Tests: Practice tests will not only familiarize you with the types of words on the ASVAB but also help you improve your ability to quickly select the correct answer.
General Tips
- Consistent Practice: Try to study a little each day rather than cramming. Break your study sessions into short, focused bursts.
- Track Your Progress: Take note of the areas where you struggle the most and revisit those topics. Practice until you’re comfortable with them.
- Use ASVAB Prep Resources: There are numerous online resources, study guides, and even mobile apps specifically designed for ASVAB preparation.
Of course, this list is not all-inclusive. When I tutor, I begin by assessing each student to understand their current knowledge level and identify specific areas for improvement. From there, I create a tailored learning plan that incorporates strategies suited to the student’s unique personality and learning style. This personalized approach ensures that each session is effective, engaging, and aligned with the student’s goals.
