Tristan Murail (1947-) is a French composer. He champions a school of thought called "spectralism". Spectralism is a kind of music that uses harmonies from the overtone series and emphasizes natural acoustic phenomena. The overtone series results from taking a string resonating at a frequency and cutting it in half again and again until the pieces remaining are very small (microtones). It has a distinctive, open, haunting, natural, and very flat (pitchwise) sound.
