Interviews can be very stressful so being fully prepared is the best way to guarantee success. There are several steps you can take to present your best self:
- Research the position, the company and the interviewers thoroughly through their website, search, LinkedIn, etc. The job description (if provided) is your most important tool to create a "match" between the position and your qualifications. Think about any "challenges" they are having that you can proactively discuss during the interview.
- Prepare a list of answers to the most common interview questions, including behavioral questions, and practice them (out loud) until you feel comfortable with the responses.
- Find someone knowledgeable to role play these questions and help you identify areas of weakness for improvement.
- Be prepared to tell your "story" in a way that will be memorable and help you stand out from other candidates. Make a list of your hard and soft skills.
- Work on your confidence so you appear assertive and qualified. That includes body language and tone of voice.
- Be authentic, positive and show enthusiasm. Interviewers want someone who is personable and will fit with the others on their team.
- Be prepared to ask questions to learn more about the company and culture and to show interest and curiosity
- Follow-up promptly after the interview to say thank you, reiterate any important points made in the interview and that you look forward to hearing back.
