There is more than one solution. For instance, a = 7, d = 9 and b = 2 and c = 6 is one possibility. Another is a = 4, d = 12, b = 1 and c = 7. So, the system is dependent.

If you have 4 wooden planks of different lengths. When plank a and d are placed end to end the totallength is 16 inches. When planks b and c are end to end the total length is 8 inches. Does this have a unique solution, inconsistent or dependent?
