VSEPR is a heuristic for understanding a lot of molecular shapes based on electronic domains (bonds and unpaired electron pairs) separating as far as possible from each other around a central atom. It is based on valence bond theory and hybridization. Molecular bonding theory goes a little deeper and explains a few more phenomena. The CFT is necessary for explaining metal complexes and ligand arrangement because of the complications of d block electron behavior.

We discussed molecular/ionic shape twice this semester. Why? Discuss the similarities and differences between VSEPR and Crystal Field Theory. When is it appropriate to use each?
