Having a strong work ethic is extremely important.
I would say that there are a few other attributes to look at as well.
In job descriptions you often see these referred to as KSAs: Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities.
If an employee has a very strong work ethic, but has no knowledge of the subject matter, it may take very, very long to train him or her and they may thus not be the best fit. Likewise, if they have a great work ethic but are simply not able to multitask, or use a computer, or lack any of the other required skills, they also may not be a good fit.
