Difference between

Amongst three numbers the second is twice the first and thrice the third. If the average of the numbers is 44 then what is the difference between the first number and the third number

If we call the numbers: (x, y, z), then: y = 2x and y = 3z. Also 44= (x+y+z)/3.

In other words, 44 = (y/2 + y + y/3) = 11y/6 , or y = 24. Therefore x=12 and z=8.

Now the difference x-z = 4.
