One of the values Democracy in America that clearly stands out is when de Tocqueville wrote, “Liberty is my foremost passion”

He describes liberty as the right of citizens to act freely, while respecting the rights of others.

This idea led him to caution people about the power of government. He described government as having a limiting effect on people’s liberty, not an enablement.
