How long should a resume be?

The usual answer to the lengh of a resume is approximately one page. The reason for that is that the resume is the trailer and not the movie. The purpose of the resume is to give the employer highlights of your career and for the employer to invite you to an interview and to have you fill out an application. The application is usually many pages long and will involve putting down jobs for many years to include the names, dates, phone numbers, addresses as well as names and contact informaiton for references. The application is the place for all the nittsy details of your career and will call for a lot of accuracy. The resume is the place to get the potential employer interested in you. CW

This is a common question that I am asked often. It really depends on your experience level. For example I have 26 years of professional experience therefore my resume is 2.5 pages because there is a lot of information for me to share. If you are a newly graduated student your resume should be one page. There is a couple of reasons for this. One is that you likley do not have enough relevant experience to add a second page. The key is relevant information. A second reason is that recruiters and hiring managers are reviewing dozens of resumes, they do not take the time to read the entire resume and are skimming for key words and phrases, you do not want to fill up your resume with everything you did in high school.
