the alcohol that gives turbid mixture when mixed with lucas reagent after warming at 60c after 5 minutes in

a) 2-methylpropanol

b) 2,2-dimethylpropanol

c) Propanol

D) ethylene glycol

Paul J.

Tertiary alcohols tend to react the fastest, with secondary alcohols reacting in about 5 minutes and primary alcohols reacting the slowest. The differences in reaction rates is due to the stability of the carbocation that forms when the reaction is producing the alkyl halide , with tertiary carbocations generally being the most stable and primary being the least stable. 2-methylpropanol is a secondary alcohol, so it will produce turbidity after a few minutes. 2,2-dimethylpropanol and propanol are both considered primary alcohols. Ethylene glycol is also primary. 2-methylpropanol should be the answer.
