Hermes is a complex god. He starts out his life by leaving his cradle and inventing the lyre, which would become the primary instrument of his godly brother, Apollo. He then ventures into farmland to steal Apollo's cattle, sealing his identity further as a god of thieves and of farming. He is also the god of travelers and merchants, and is the god who leads the dead down into the Underworld.
