Slavery was not a high on the agenda by the constitutional convention because the issue of slavery was still one which the early nation was divided on. The constitution was created with a goal of unifying the nation under a new set of supreme laws and the issue of slavery was one that created only divisions in the nation, therefore the convention did not focus on the issue so as to not exasperate the divides already present within the nation.
