Why does C ::: N have a triple bond?

Cyanide is made up of a nitrogen atom and 2 carbon atoms along with the hydrogen. Carbon has 4 valence electrons and nitrogen has 5 valence electrons. The bond then between carbon and nitrogen is a triple one with an extra electron from the nitrogen giving cyanide a negative charge. ( an ion )
