To simplify, you have to follow the order of operations.
For this problem, you have to deal with your parentheses first, or in other words, distribute the first g to everything inside the parentheses. (you know to distribute because the g is right next to the parenthesis; you can distribute g(12+g) but NOT g+(12+g)
g(12+g) -9g -17
12g+gxg-9g -17
Now simplify any multiplication, remember that gxg=g2
12g+g2-9g -17
You can add or subtract anything with like terms ?(12g-9g). g and g2 UNlike terms so do NOT combine.
12g+g2-9g -17
g2+3g -17
