Well, there's 3 people.
There's a half of a gallon of water available, you're starting at 1/2.
Three people are sharing 1/2 equally.
Because you're needing the fraction for the whole gallon of water, and there's 3 people, and only half left, instead of looking at it as 1/2, we'll look at it as 3/6.
So if you have to split 3/6 between three people, each person will get 1/6th of a gallon of water.
