Nomenclature is a word that means a naming system. So ionic nomenclature is the the naming of ionic compounds such as sodium chloride or iron (II) sulfate. Covalent nomenclature is the naming of covalent compounds like carbon dioxide. Organic nomenclature is the system we use to name organic compounds.

Nomenclature is the systematic naming system used for organic (and inorganic) compounds such at methane or 1-butene or 2-diethanol. The system allows you to easily identify the different types of functional groups and bonding patterns found within the molecule by only seeing the name and not the entire structure. Alkanes, alkenes and alkynes will all be named differently according to the number of bonds found within the molecule.
