In my opinion, the simplest explanation can be obtained directly from Heisenberg's principle. Conjugation leads to an extended orbital, and that means the electrons that occupy it get more space (literally) that means greater deltaX, which means deltaP (and, hence, total energy) is lower. That is somewhat oversimplified explanation, but it not incorrect
