Let x be the "number" in this problem. So from the problem we get that 6x-3 = 9 (product of 6 and a number is 6x), (three less is -3), and it is all equal to 9. We then solve the equation by adding 3 to both sides to get 6x=12. Then we divide both sides by 6 to get x=2.
