Why is the standard tuning for the guitar E A D G B E, from the lowest string to the highest? The interval between strings is a perfect 4th, except for the interval between the G and B strings, which is a major third. Then there is a perfect 4th between the B and E strings, so that the lowest string and the highest string are the same pitch, two octaves apart. Is there any significance to this tuning? Is this a convention to make fingering chords easier?
The reason why there is this major third instead of a fourth between the G and B strings is for the top two strings to share more overtones with the rest of the strings. This makes the instrument more resonant on open strings.
