I have an algorithmic approach to problem solving.
1) Don't read the question, just look for what you need to find and write that down.
2) Find all equations/formulae related to the answer you seek.
3) List all the data given in the problem neatly, and put a question mark on the unknown objects.
4) Rearrange, and strategize i.e. it is like a puzzle, and you just gotta connect the dots.
5) Solve.
Now, this method basically takes the guesswork out of solving problems. It works really well as long as you collect all the appropriate data because some stuff is not in the question like it may reference the radius of the Earth or something, but not give the measurement so you have to look it up. Research is what you are training for.
