One way to do it might be to shift all the harmonies down by a third. If your original chord progression is C F C, that would give you Am Dm Am. Most of the melody notes would probably still fit in the chord, but it would probably feel darker.
I would also experiment with slowing down the tempo, and possibly changing some of the rhythms; syncopations tend to sound jaunty, so smoothing out the rhythm might help.
