C- clefs were used for voices. Each voice type had their own C- clef telling them where is middle C on the staff. There is so soprano clef. mezzo-soprano clef, alto clef, tenor clef, and baritone clef. When the operatic world started to become popular, and the instrumental world started to increase, composers and performers were just tired of learning several clefs. So they invented the G- clef around the time after Bach's death. First for instruments only for kind of like a test run, and then composers used the G- clef and still uses it for vocal parts to this day. I personally think altos and tenors should still be in alto and tenor clefs.
