On a Mac the function keys have system presets. To override the preset you must hold the <fn> key along with <F3>. If you prefer to completely override all presets then go to System Preferences>>Keyboard and check the box next to: Use F1, F2, etc keys as standard function keys. You must then hold the <fn> to invoke the system presets if need be.
