For the System Management Controller (SMC) reset you want to shutdown first. Make sure the power cable is connected. Then hold down Shift + Control + Option and the Power Button all at the same time The little light on the MagSafe adapter 'may' change colors briefly. Hold these keys and button for approximately 5 seconds. Release "all" keys and button simultaneously and then boot your MacBook as normal.

For the Parameter Ram (PRAM), first shut down your Mac. Then press the power button and before the startup chimes sound simultaneously hold the Command + Option + P + R keys until the computer plays the startup chimes for the second time. Then release.
