To check the current RAM that is being used and by what processes: hit F4 -> Other -> Activity Monitor -> Memory tab
or go to Finder -> Applications -> Utilities -> Activity Monitor -> Memory tab

If you click the apple in the top left corner of the screen -> About This Mac, it should be next to "memory" on that screen.
