Where/When did the modern guitar originate?

I keep thinking of Greeks playing Lyres - there had to be a point where someone added strings and the modern shape...

The modern guitar originated from the Spanish guitar. The lyre is kind of an original instrument every stringed or fretted modern instrument is based off of. You can technically say the idea of the guitar is from the lyre, but that is not really true. The modern instruments that are closest to the lyre are the harp and the piano.
