PRAM is the memory that stores the default values for details of your Mac. It could also be described at the memory that holds core data.
Resetting it often helps with issues related to startup disk, virtual memory, sound, etc. Many consider it a good habit to reset the PRAM after installing new software, or upgrading the operating system.
