How to make melodies effectively?

Are there any tricks that help make melodies besides just experimenting until you find something that sounds nice?

I would say try playing a real instrument and experimenting there or borrowing certain techniques in the melodies of the songs' you love.

A good melody should:

1. follow the chord structure - especially on strong beats such as the first beat of each measure.
2. create a connectable line; it should contain smaller intervals and use larger intervals for emphasis and effect.
3. balance variation and repetition so that it is distinct and interesting.
4. be the most prominent feature of the music
5. create an arching contour or a  melodic motion with at least one climactic event.
