The passage of the saxophone from the European classical music environment to the jazz combos developed during the last decades of 19th century, mostly through the fostering of such figures as Patrick Gilmore (1829-1892), leader of the 22nd Regiment National Guard Band, and Edward A. Lefebre (1834-1911), a Dutch-born saxophonist settled in New York, the latter having direct association with Adolphe Sax, the Belgian inventor of the instrument.
Lefebre joined the 22d Regiment Band, which became one of the first American military bands to include a full saxophone section. In the first decades of 20th century the saxophone began to be included in Vaudeville and Ragtime bands as well, then in dance orchestras and eventually in jazz orchestras and combos.
