The ASVAB tests a wide cross-section of subjects that are typically taught at the high school level: general science, mathematical knowledge up to and including Algebra I and Geometry, vocabulary, reading comprehension, understanding of simple mechanical and electrical systems, and spatial reasoning.
The ASVAB is universally used by each of the five services; it is not specific to any branch. However, the way your individual section scores from the ASVAB are looked at to determine job skill eligibility varies from branch to branch.
For instance, the Air Force uses the MAGE system. It takes your line scores (from individual sections) and combines them in certain ways into four larger categories: Mechanical, Administrative, General, and Electronics. How well you score in each of the four categories then determines--for the Air Force, at least--how well you might perform in the jobs skills that require those knowledge sets.
