Internet recovery is a built in feature on newer macs (I think around 2012 and later) that allows a user to reinstall their operating system or boot to recovery mode without using an install disk or internal recovery partition. You can start internet recovery by holding down command + option + R during startup (as soon as you hear the startup chime).
