It is unclear where the rainstick originated, but experts believe that it originated in Latin America, specifically in Chile and Argentina. They were made by drying out hollowed cacti native to those regions. Once dried, the cacti would be filled with small pebbles, and the ends were closed. When the position of the rainstick changed, the pebbles would move in that direction, and the sound of the pebbles rubbing against the inside of the cactus simulated the sound of rain falling.
Did the rain stick originate independently in multiple continents?
There is a traditional rain stick (percussion instrument) in African, Latin America, and I believe in Australia as well. Was it invented separately, or did one culture influence another? Here is a demonstration of the sound of a rain stick: https://youtu.be/xu4ODqNJgPE
