15+ Years Revit Experience
I am not familiar with Tekla but seeing that is similar to Revit, LOD stands for Level of Detail.
Revit came along so fast that there weren't any industry standards set in place for accountability and responsibility between architects, consultants and contractors, for what was modeled and what was actually built. LOD helps everyone agree to a level of detail that is expected and provided in a 3D model.
There are 5 levels ranging from 100, 200, 300, 400, & 500. 100 being the simplest representation of design intent to 500 being exact representation of design intent. The ideal LOD is around 300.
