There are three fundamental conditions that have to be fulfilled in order for you to learn an AutoCad/BIM software, especially Revit, besides having access to the software itself. These 3 conditions are: guidance, pressure, and motivation. This is because, unlike many things, the process of learning a BIM software is not linear. It takes some one who really know the inner working of BIM to guide you through the initial state, answer your questions, help you avoid pit falls, and trouble shoot when issue arise. Secondly, you need some kind of constructive pressure to constantly evaluate and improve your work flow. Thirdly, because learning BIM software are very daunting, you need friends around you who do the same things and struggle through the same issues, so that you are encouraged and not give up. The best way to learn a BIM software, then, is to lie on your resume that you know a BIM software, then, once being accepted into a firm, ask many questions and learn it on the go. This may sound outrageous to some, but it is the truth. In this environment, your competent coworkers are your guidance, your job is your pressure, and your career is your motivation. The second best way is to get with a few friends and then hire a tutor, like me, to come help you in person. The worst way to learn a BIM software is to learn it from a book by yourself.
