I need help

The math and the science club had fundraisers to buy supplies for a hospice. The math club spent $145 buying 5 cases of juice and 2 cases of water. The science club spent $110 buying 4 cases of juice and 1 case of water. How much did each case of juice cost? How much was each case of bottled water?

Set up two equations and subtract them:

 

5j + 2w = 145

 

  -  4j +   w = 110

________________

  j  + w =    35

 

so j = 35 - w

 

Take either equation, sub in (35 - w) for the j, and then you'll be able to solve for w to find out how many cases of water there were. Once you've got that, you can figure out the amount of juice, too!
