Fullerenes are a conglomerate of carbon atoms that typically are in either a spherical or cylindrical shape - these are often referred to as buckyballs or buckytubes, respectively. The family is fully named buckminsterfullenes because the first observed example resembled a geodesic dome popularized by Buckminster Fuller.
