since Jackie has 7 quarters more than dimes, if you want to make them equal you have to add 7 to the dimes or subtract 7 from the quarters.
q = d+7
Each quarter is 25 cents, or 0.25 of a dollar =0.25q
Each dime is 10 cents= 0.10d
:
0.25q+0.10d = 5.60
as q = d+7. Substitute in this equation:
0.25(d+7)+0.10d = 5.60
0.25d+1.75+0.10d = 5.60
0.25(d+7)+0.10d = 5.60
0.25d+1.75+0.10d = 5.60
0.35d = 3.85
d = 11
She has 11 dimes and 11+7 = 18 quarters.

Check:
11*0.10 = 1.1
18*0.25 = 4.5
------------------------------------------------
Check:
11*0.10 = 1.1
18*0.25 = 4.5
1.1 +4.5 =5.60
