A point on the rim of a turbine wheel of diameter 49.74 ft moves with a linear speed of 68.33 ft/s. Find the rate at which the wheel turns in revolutions per minute

Using the following conversions of

circumference = 1 revolution (where C = pi*d)

and

60 seconds = 1 minute,

 

we get

 

68.33 ft            1 rev                  60 sec

---------  *  ---------------    *   -----------  ≈ 26.24 rev/min

  1 sec         (pi) * 49.74 ft          1 min

 

Units cancel like numbers when dividing, so the 'feet' and the 'seconds' cancelled, leaving rev/min, as we wanted.
