Jenny and kristan each improved their yards by planting rose bushes and ivy. They bought their supplies from the same store. Jenny spent $123 on 12 rose bushes and 9 pots of ivy. Kristin spent $115 on 8 roses and 9 pots of ivy. Find the cost of one rose bush and the cost of one pot of ivy.

Let r = price of roses

Let i = price of ivy

 

12r + 9i = 123

8r + 9i = 115     We can subtract 2nd equation from 1st to solve for r

4r + 0i  = 8

4r = 8

r = $2 for a rose bush

 

Substitute in 2 for r in one of the original equations and solve for i.

8r + 9i = 115

8(2) + 9i = 115

16 + 9i = 115

9i = 99

i = $11 for a pot of ivy

 

Check:

12r + 9i = 123

24 + 99 = 123

123 = 123

 

8r + 9i = 115

16 + 99 = 115

115 = 115
