Age word problem

A father is 9 times older than his daughter and 2 years older than his wife. If the sum of their ages is 74,how old is the father ?

First choose variables for the unknowns:

f = father's age

w = wife's age

d = daughter's age

 

Now set up equations from info given:

 

f = 9d

f = w+2

f + w + d = 74

 

From 2nd:  w = f - 2 = 9d - 2

 

now use 3rd equation:

9d + (9d-2) + d = 74

19d - 2 = 74

19d = 76

d = 4

 

From here use the original equations to find ages of

father and wife.
