let the father's age = x

John's age = x - 24

 

In five years, the father's age will be (x + 5), and John's age will (x - 24) + 5 = (x - 19)

 

x + 5 = 3(x - 19)

x + 5 = 3x - 57

5 = 2x - 57

62 = 2x

31 = x

 

The father is 31 now, and John is currently 31 - 24 = 7 years old.

In 25 years, the father will be 31 + 25 = 56 years old.
