For the original problem of 3x = 7 - 5x:
First, get all the x's together, by adding or subtracting the same term from both sides of the equation, to keep it balanced: Let's add 5x to both sides: 3x + 5x = 7 - 5x + 5x
Do the addition: 8x = 7
Now get x by itself: divide both sides of the equation by 8: 8x/8 = 7/8. Now x = 7/8
=============================
"When 4 added to one half the number x..." one half x = x/2, or (1/2)x. Now add 4: (1/2)x + 4
"...result is the same as..." means equals (=)
"2 had been subtracted from the number x": x - 2
So you are CORRECT: (1/2)x + 4 = x - 2

You are correct.
Let's break it down.
When 4 4
is added to +
one half 1/2
(of) x x
the result is the same as =
two subtracted from -2
the number x x
Putting that all together, we get
4 + 1/2 (x) = -2 + x.
Rearranging using the commutative property,
1/2 (x) + 4 = x - 2
