You need to increase the surface area of absorption , Hence there are many folds , one of them is the formation of villi . In addition to villi the lining cells of the intestine have microvilli which further increase the surface area . Imagine this , when the small intestine is spread out it is the area of a soccer field . Hence there are many villi .
