x+2y=-1........eq 1

5x-4y=16........eq 2

 

Multiply eq 1 by 2, we get

2x+4y=-2

5x-4y=16

adding these equations,

7x=14

x=2

substituting value of x=2 in eq 1,

2+2y=-1

2y=-3

y=-3/2

check: x+2y=2+2(-3/2)=2-3=-1.

          It satisfies the equation 1.

Ans: x=2, y=-3/2
