what if it was like this.write the equation of the line in general form whose x-intercept is 3 and y- intercept of -4.

Since the x-intercept is 3 and the y-intercept is -4, the points (3,0) and (0,-4) lie on the line.  Slope = (-4-0)/(0-3) = 4/3.  
 
Equation of line:  y = (4/3)x - 4
