how would i solve this problem or a problem similar a= 1/x+1/a=1/b, then x=

I am horrible at algebra and fractions. I am trying to pass a placement test for college....please help

Your expression has two equal signs. Which expressions are equal?

If your equation is:
1/x + 1/a = 1/b    then:
 
1/x = 1/b - 1/a
Get a common denominator on the right... that would be ab
 
1/x = a/ab - b/ab
1/x = (a-b)/ab
 
Cross multiply
(a-b)x = ab
 
divide both sides by (a-b)
 
x = ab/(a-b)
