20 foot board is cut into three pieces.The second piece is 2 feet longer than the first piece and the third piece is 4 feet longer than the second. What are the lengths of the three pieces?

Pieces: x=1st, y=2nd, z=3rd.

 

x+y+z=20

y = x+2

z = y+4

 

z = (x+2) + 4 = x+6

 

x+(x+2)+(x+6)=20

3x+8=20

3x=12

x=4

 

y= 4+2=6

 

z = 4+4 = 10

 

So the answers are 4,6,10.
